One of the more intriguing players in Illinois’ 2026 class, Colton Benaitis of Lockport Township High School is beginning to see his recruitment pick up after a strong showing this year.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound safety, who can also line up at wide receiver and linebacker, has already earned five offers, with Cincinnati, South Dakota State, Toledo, Central Michigan and Northern Illinois all extending scholarships.

South Dakota State, one of the more recent programs to offer, has made a strong early impression on the rising junior.

“It’s awesome so far — every coach I’ve talked to is great, and it seems like a family there,” Benaitis said. “That is one of the biggest things I look for in a college. I couldn’t tell you exactly what they think [of me], but they told me they love my aggressiveness and ball skills.”

Benaitis is coming off a breakout junior season in which he was named SWSC All-Conference and finished the year with six interceptions. One of his top performances came in a win over Naperville Central (IL), when he recorded two interceptions, including a fourth-quarter pick-six.

Being in position to thrive like that at the next level is something Benaitis is hoping to do, but he said he’s also looking for a program that offers more than just football.

“Culture is huge for me. I want to play for a family as well as a team,” he said. “I want to build brotherhood that will last a lifetime. Also a program that will turn boys into men and develop more than just football players.”

While no official visits are currently locked in, he noted that Central Michigan is in talks to schedule one in the near future.

When it comes to his game, the versatile defender prides himself on controlled aggression and a fearless mindset.

“I play very aggressive in a controlled manner,” he said. “I have a mindset like no other and I make it known I love contact.”
